Not true. The reasoning is two-fold (at least). 1. Thread engagement. You want as much as possible to keep your wheel secure, but if engineered properly you can use less threads and thus a thinner material.

I think it would be more cost effective to just find a set of rims that fit your car because spacers can be fairly expensive. Top.

The PCD variation bolts have some limitations though. They can only be used for small corrections. The most common applications are 98 PCD to 100 PCD and 112 PCD to 114.3 PCD. It is not a miraculous cure that will allow you to fit a 5x114.3 alloy wheel on to a 4x100 PCD hub.

I tried and your right, usually the adapters are too thick. The thinnest 5x100 to 5x112 adapter I've found is 20mm. Subtract the thickness of the adapter from the wheel's et to find your working offset.
